Easily one of the coolest moments of this year's Comic Con was running into Joss Whedon at a party and talking to him about his upcoming work with Marvel Studios. Part of the conversation included confirmation that he did work on the script for Captain America: The First Avenger. Now he has opened up about exactly what he changed.
Earth's Mightiest got the chance to sit down with Whedon and talk about what exactly he changed in the script for the Joe Johnston flick, which is due out next summer. It turns out that he didn't have to do too much.
I just got to make some character connections. The structure of the thing was really tight and I loved it, but there were a couple of opportunities to find his voice a little bit — and some of the other characters — and make the connections so that you understood exactly why he wanted to be who he wanted to be. And progressing through the script to flesh it out a little bit.
Whedon hasn't exactly been shy about sharing his nerves about the Marvel Universe, but he has something that most comic book directors do not: a complete understanding of the source material. He doesn't have the same level of directing experience as some others might, but what he brings to the Marvel universe is knowledge and history and when you're dealing with characters that have been beloved for generations, that's incredibly important.
