Originally titled Fight for the Netherworld, this 1994 feature is the second theatrical release based on the 1992 TV series. Viewers unfamiliar with the series may have trouble following the story, as the filmmakers don't introduce the characters or situations adequately. When the River Styx floods the Spirit World, Koenma entrusts a Sphere of Power to Botan; she tries to take it to "spirit investigator" Yusuke. Yakumo, the former King of the Nether World, returns from exile in space to obtain the Sphere: its power will enable him to reestablish his vanished realm on Earth. After initial fights at five sites in Tokyo between Yusuke and his friends and Yakumo's agents, the conflict climaxes with the inevitable duel between Yusuke and Yakumo. The animation is quite lavish by anime standards, but it's wasted on a threadbare story and hackneyed dialogue. Rated 16 Up: Considerable violence, grotesque imagery, minor profanity.
